In the age of technology becoming better with each new device, we seem to now be in a realm of cellular technology that is defined as 'smart'. The term Smartphone is being tossed around, and attached to dozens of different types of cellular phones. The question is, what exactly does it mean to have a Smartphone, and why is it any different than the average phones we had prior to the 'smart' variety?
A Smartphone can formally be defined as a cellular or mobile phone that contains abilities far beyond that of a basic phone. With the capabilities to run applications, supply the consumer with downloadable software and organizing devices, as well as carrying many of the same characteristics of a personal computer system, these handy items are helping consumers run their lives.
How did this Smartphone phenomenon all begin? In 1992, IBM designed the very first Smartphone, named SIMON. It was first released publicly in 1993, containing a touch screen, ability to fax, email and a world clock. Amongst its other features, it was the start of new technology.
Then, in 1996 Nokia released their rendition of a Smartphone, which was called the Nokia Communicator 9000. The Nokia 9210 (created shortly thereafter) contained the first color touch screen, while the Nokia 9500 also possessed WiFi and a camera phone communicator. New generations of this new Smartphone continued to be produced, having more and more features, applications and technological capabilities. It was not until 1997 that Ericsson released their first Smartphone, actually labeled 'Smartphone'.
The idea took off, and companies nationwide started to release their very own version of the Smartphone. Microsoft released the Windows CE in 2001, and the Palm OS Treo was released by Handspring in 2002. Also in 2002, the very first Blackberry was released by RIM. By 2009 over thirty million individuals would own a Blackberry Smartphone.
In 2007 the first iPhone was released by Apple. This Apple Smartphone had an amazing touch screen, a web browser, and seemed to be the best version of a Smartphone to date. Costing close to five hundred dollars, initially, this piece of technology was popular, but expensive for the average consumer.
In later generations of the iPhone, jail breaking became an issue amongst iPhone owners. This process of individuals breaking into other individual's cellular smartphone devices caused an uproar and mass amounts of need for iPhone repair.
Shortly thereafter, Apple introduced their AppStore, which, after mid 2009 contained over one hundred and eight thousand downloadable applications. The price of the iPhone, and all other Smartphones slowly began to dwindle in price. This made the Smartphone more accessible to the average cellular phone consumer.
It is hard to believe that cellular phones have come so far within such a short amount of time. Over sixty percent of cellular phone users, have now purchased some sort of Smartphone from a variety of possible carriers. As the Smartphones continue to grow smarter, it is exciting to think of what may come next.
